SEND 1:1 Mentoring
At PMActive we support children and young people to navigate the challenges of growing up and to develop the confidence they need to live happy and healthy lives. It’s important to remember, we’re not councillors or therapists, what we offer is a friendly and compassionate individual with years of personal and professional experience listening to and supporting children and young people with SEND.
SEND 1:1 Mentoring
What to expect
At PMActive, our Mentoring Service offers consistent, relationship-led support for children and young people who benefit from a low-demand, autonomy-respecting approach. Designed with PDA profiles and neurodivergent needs in mind, our mentoring is flexible, interest-led, and built around trust first.
We understand that progress happens when a young person feels safe, heard, and in control. Our mentors work at the individual’s pace, following their interests and preferences, and reducing pressure wherever possible. Support is available on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis and can take place at home or within the community.
Our Approach
-
Relationship Before Expectation - We prioritise connection over compliance. By building a consistent, respectful relationship, mentors create a foundation of emotional safety where young people feel understood rather than managed.
-
Low-Demand, Autonomy-Respecting Support - We reduce direct demands and instead use collaborative, indirect, and curiosity-led approaches. Young people are offered choice, flexibility, and shared decision-making, helping to lower anxiety and build trust.
-
Interest-Led Engagement - Sessions are shaped around what genuinely motivates the individual — whether that’s gaming, sport, creative activities, walking, problem-solving, or simply having space to talk. Engagement grows naturally when interests are valued.
-
Emotional Regulation & Wellbeing - Mentors provide calm co-regulation support and help young people develop self-awareness, resilience, and coping strategies in a way that feels safe and achievable. Emotional wellbeing is embedded in every interaction.
-
Gentle Academic & Life Skill Support - Where appropriate, mentors can provide light-touch academic encouragement or practical life skills support, overseen by our qualified teacher, Rachel. This is delivered in a flexible, non-pressured way that protects the young person’s sense of autonomy.
-
Flexible & Responsive Delivery - Support can be provided at home, in community settings, or alongside other services such as sports coaching or travel training. We adapt to fluctuating needs, recognising that capacity can vary day to day.
Intended Outcomes
Our mentoring is outcome-focused but person-centred. We aim to support:
-
Increased emotional regulation and reduced anxiety
-
Strengthened self-esteem and identity
-
Improved trust in safe adults
-
Greater engagement with learning, community, or daily activities
-
Development of communication and social confidence
-
Above all, our Mentoring Service provides a consistent, supportive presence — someone to walk alongside the young person, not push ahead of them. We meet them where they are and move forward together, at a pace that feels manageable and respectful.
